BetterBedderBureau |Findings |

Cocoon by Sealy offers two different mattress models.  The Cocoon Classic and Cocoon Chill are constructed with a comfort layer of memory foam and a support layer of polyfoam, and are available in two firmness options.  The difference between the two models is the cover.  The Classic’s cover is constructed with a blend of polyester and cotton, while the Chill is equipped with a polyester-cotton stretch-knit cover containing phase-change material (PCM) to be cool to the touch.

Our review of the Cocoon mattresses found that motion was contained quite well when a sleeper was moving about the mattress.  We also found the phase change material to be cool to the touch mitigating the normal heat trapping found in most foam mattresses.

Cocoon by Sealy mattresses are available in two different firmness ratings: ‘Soft,’ which corresponds to a 4 (or ‘Medium Soft’) on our 1-10 Firmness Scale; and ‘Firm,’ which corresponds to a 6 (or ‘Medium Firm’). The Cocoon Classic and Cocoon Chill share the same construction, but both models have different covers. A full breakdown of mattress layers and measurements is found in the table below.

While sleep preference differs from person to person, we would recommend heavier sleepers going with the ‘firm’ model for support purposes while lighter sleepers go with the ‘soft’ option.

What Type of Sleeper Is Best Suited for a Cocoon Mattress?

Based on our customer feedback, the Cocoon Mattress has received the following grades among sleepers of different weights and preferred sleep positions. Please note that these ratings are subjective, and that everyone has varying experiences on different mattresses. Sleeper comfort and spinal support are the most important factors when it comes to selecting a mattress.

As you can see, the Cocoon is a nice choice for side sleepers of all weight categories based on the two firmness options, and performs well for those who sleep on their back. We are weary of recommending the soft option of the Cocoon to larger shoppers, since likely will lack the necessary support, but the firm option of the mattress should be great.  While the Phase Change Material is cool to the touch, if the mattress is rightly covered with a protector and fitted sheet, you won’t be able to take full advantage of the ‘cool to the touch’ feel

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

Our testing process found the Cocoon should also be great for you if…

  • You’re looking for an affordable memory foam mattress.
  • You love the feel of memory foam – sleeping more “in” than “on” a bed.
  • You tend to sleep hot and want to take advantage of phase change material
  • You sleep with a partner and want to limit the movement you feel on the bed.

Durability 2 – Durability appears to be average for both Cocoon mattress models, but Cocoon by Sealy launched in March 2016 and the overall lifespan for these mattresses has not been fully assessed.
Motion Isolation 4 – According to owners, the Cocoon Chill absorbs and isolates motion transfer to a significant extent.
Off-gassing 2 – Like most memory foam models, Cocoon mattresses produce some off-gassing odors when unpackaged — but the smells will usually dissipate within one or two days.
Conforming 4 – Owners report that Cocoon mattresses conform very closely and relieve a fair amount of pressure; two available firmness ratings accommodate sleepers with different contouring preferences.
Sex 2 – Owners with ‘Firm’ Cocoon mattresses say they are somewhat responsive and bouncy, but the ‘Soft’ mattresses are not responsive enough for most couples.
Temperature Neutrality 3 – Despite the claims, owner experiences show the cocoon chill mattress doesn’t regulate temperature better than other all foam models.
Edge Support 1 – Cocoon by Sealy mattresses offer little to no edge support, and premature sinkage has been reported along the edges where people tend to sit.
Noise 5 – The Cocoon Chill is virtually silent when bearing weight.
